The world is divided into regions with distinct environmental regimes — temperature bands, weather patterns, biome-specific hazards — that demand different preparation, equipment, and strategies per zone.
In-game time advances continuously, cycling lighting, NPC schedules, spawns, and available activities between day and night.
Weather changes over time — rain, storms, snow, heat — and ideally changes play, not just visuals: Breath of the Wild's rain makes cliffs unclimbable and its lightning strikes metal gear; Red Dead Redemption 2's mud slows travel.
Seismic disaster events that damage structures, reshape terrain, or interrupt operations — periodic tremors in a colony sim, a scripted quake as a story beat, or a random catastrophe testing city resilience.
Rising water as a dynamic hazard — rivers bursting banks, storms surging coastlines, dam failures — that submerges terrain, destroys structures, and reroutes play.
Atmospheric visibility reduction — rolling mist, dense fog banks, sandstorms — that shortens sightlines for both player and AI, changing combat, navigation, and mood.
Lightning as an active hazard and tool — storms that strike tall objects, metal gear that attracts bolts, electrocuted water, and harnessable strikes.
Radioactive contamination as an environmental hazard — irradiated zones ticking damage, radiation accumulating in the body as a second health track, gear checks (suits, filters, meds) gating entry to hot areas.
Rain as a systemic modifier rather than weather wallpaper — wet surfaces changing traction and climbing, dampened sound and visibility shifting stealth math, fires extinguished, crops watered, morale and mood shaded.
Sand and dust storms as environmental events — visibility collapsing to meters, movement penalties, damage over exposure, terrain and objects buried or revealed when the storm passes.
In-game time cycles through seasons that change the environment, available activities, resources, and challenges.
Frozen conditions as terrain and system — snow that slows movement and holds tracks, ice that slicks traction and freezes water into crossable bridges, cold zones demanding warmth gear and shelter.
Environmental temperature acts on the character: cold zones drain warmth toward hypothermia, heat brings exhaustion, and survival requires clothing, shelter, fire, and route planning.
Areas that damage by presence — poison swamps ticking health away, gas pockets demanding masks, contaminated regions requiring hazmat progression, spreading corruption that claims the map.
Volcanism as hazard and terraformer — eruptions raining fire and ash, lava flows consuming and creating terrain, geothermal zones pairing danger with energy wealth, the mountain that remakes the map.
Wind as a simulated force with direction and magnitude — sails that demand tacking against it, projectiles drifting in it, fires spreading with it, gliders riding it, the invisible vector that reshapes movement and aim.
