Minecraft's Nether and lava lakes made molten rock a generation's first environmental death, survival islands stage eruptions as evacuation events (Volcanoids builds its whole loop on scheduled eruptions — surface windows between drillship retreats), colony and city sims run volcanoes as catastrophe tests (Cities: Skylines' disasters, Surviving Mars-likes trading geothermal power against proximity risk), strategy maps place volcanic tiles as high-yield/high-risk provinces (Civilization VI's volcanoes literally fertilize adjacent tiles between eruptions — the mechanic's thesis in one design), and action games use eruption as set-piece clockwork. Designers deploy volcanism because it's the rare disaster that gives as it takes: floods and quakes only destroy, but the volcano is a bargain — fertile soils, geothermal energy, rare minerals cluster exactly where the danger lives, so settling the slopes is a priced decision (the best land is the worst land — Civ's volcanic soil yields are the risk premium made legible), and the eruption, when it comes, audits a choice the player made knowingly. That knowing is the design's hinge: volcanoes telegraph (rumbles, vents, warning phases), so eruptions occupy the fair-disaster sweet spot — scheduled enough to prepare for, uncertain enough to dread — and the evacuation-and-return cycle creates rhythmic gameplay no random catastrophe manages. Lava itself is the mechanic's second life: as terrain, it's the perfect hazard (absolutely lethal, absolutely visible, absolutely honest — nobody disputes death by lava), and as dynamic flow it reshapes maps in real time, destroying and creating land (the cooled flow as new terrain is world-building by catastrophe). Key decisions: eruption predictability spectrum (fixed schedules enable planning gameplay; probabilistic warnings create tension; pure randomness is punishment), the risk-reward pricing of volcanic proximity (yields must genuinely tempt or the hazard zone is dead map), lava's simulation depth (static kill-plane, spreading flow, or full fluid with cooling — each tier buys drama at cost), and aftermath permanence — whether eruptions scar, fertilize, or reset the land determines if volcanism is a cycle or an event. Pitfall: the volcano as scenery with a timer — if eruptions rarely happen, barely reach the player, and change nothing lasting, the mountain is a mood prop; volcanism earns its budget when players make different decisions because it's there — the settlement placed reluctantly, the mine rushed between rumbles — because a hazard that never altered a plan never actually existed.
