Key decisions: eruption predictability spectrum (fixed schedules enable planning gameplay; probabilistic warnings create tension; pure randomness is punishment), the risk-reward pricing of volcanic proximity (yields must genuinely tempt or the hazard zone is dead map), lava's simulation depth (static kill-plane, spreading flow, or full fluid with cooling — each tier buys drama at cost), and aftermath permanence — whether eruptions scar, fertilize, or reset the land determines if volcanism is a cycle or an event. Pitfall: the volcano as scenery with a timer — if eruptions rarely happen, barely reach the player, and change nothing lasting, the mountain is a mood prop; volcanism earns its budget when players make different decisions because it's there — the settlement placed reluctantly, the mine rushed between rumbles — because a hazard that never altered a plan never actually existed.
