Sailing games are wind as core mechanic (Sailwind and naval sims where points-of-sail knowledge is the skill; Sea of Thieves' simplified wind still makes sail-trimming cooperative gameplay; The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker made wind direction the ocean's mood and mechanic), long-range shooting simulates drift (Sniper Elite's wind flags and mildot holds — wind as the variable that separates marksmen from clickers), survival and strategy fires spread downwind (the wind check before lighting anything in Far Cry or RimWorld is learned respect), gliding and flight systems ride currents (Breath of the Wild's updrafts as vertical transit), and golf games built decades of play on a two-digit wind readout. Designers simulate wind because it's an invisible force that makes space directional: without wind, the map is isotropic (all directions equal), but with it, every route has a with-the-grain and against-the-grain (the sail journey out is not the journey back — wind converts travel into planning), every long shot is a calculation (the wind hold as skill expression — compensating is the difference between aiming at and aiming for), and every fire is a decision with a downwind (wind makes consequences directional, which makes positioning around hazards real). Wind's invisibility is its design challenge and its charm: the force must be read through instruments (flags, telltales, readouts) or through the world's response (grass bending, smoke drifting, sails luffing — environmental wind-reading is elegant diegetic UI), and learning to see the invisible is a mastery arc in itself. Key decisions: simulation depth versus readability (constant global wind is learnable and gamey; gusting, terrain-shadowed, shifting wind is rich and demands more instrumentation), the compensation interface (explicit readouts and aim-assist marks versus raw environmental cues — the choice sets the skill floor), how many systems wind touches (sailing-only wind is a travel mechanic; wind that moves fire, scent, sound, and projectiles is a world property — stealth games where you stay downwind of dogs multiply the vector's meaning), and player wind manipulation (changeable wind via items or magic — Wind Waker's baton — converts the constraint into a tool). Pitfall: wind as unreadable randomness — drift and drag applied without sufficient instruments or cues turns wind from skill-check into dice (the shot that missed for invisible reasons, the fire that turned without warning); wind earns its simulation when players can read it, plan against it, and blame themselves — because a force you can't perceive isn't weather, it's noise wearing a nautical theme.
