Fallout made rads an identity (accumulating radiation caps max health until purged, ghouls as the fiction's mascots), S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s Zone layers radiation pockets invisibly across its terrain (the Geiger counter's crackle is the series' true protagonist), Subnautica's reactor spill gates early exploration until the suit is built, and colony sims use fallout events to force everyone indoors. Designers use radiation because it's the perfect invisible wall that isn't one: a hot zone is passable — at a price, with preparation, for a duration — so it gates space by readiness rather than by key, and the gating is analog (dip in briefly, or gear up and stay). The accumulation model matters: instant damage makes radiation just spicy fire, but accumulating dose that persists and demands scarce cures (RadAway economics) makes every irradiated excursion a loan against future resources, and hazard zones become push-your-luck economies. Radiation's invisibility is also its atmosphere: the Geiger counter converts an unseen threat into escalating audio dread, environmental storytelling's favorite instrument. Key decisions: dose mechanics (instant, accumulating, or maximum-health suppression — each is a different economy), counterplay layers (protection gear, meds, time limits, decontamination), and detection — how players perceive the invisible, from HUD meters to diegetic crackle. Pitfall: radiation as reskinned poison — if rads are just a damage-over-time with a hazmat coat of paint, the mechanic wastes its distinct promise; what makes radiation radiation is the dread of accumulation, the preparation ritual, and the counter's rising tick — remove those and you've built a green swamp.
