WORLD REACTIVITY

The world visibly responding to what the player has done — NPCs commenting on your deeds, factions repricing you by reputation, storefronts and skylines changing after quests, the save file's accumulated choices rendered back as a changed place.

The reactive canon: Fallout: New Vegas tracks faction reputation into greetings, prices, ambushes, and endings (the world's opinion of you is load-bearing), Red Dead Redemption 2's NPCs remember your gun-waving three visits later (micro-reactivity as texture), Witcher 3 quest outcomes re-dress entire regions (the baron's estate after — the world wearing your choices), Middle-earth's Nemesis system industrialized personal reactivity (enemies who remember, scar, and grudge), Undertale reads your save-scumming back to you, and immersive sims log the vent you entered through because the guard mentions it. Designers invest in reactivity because it's the difference between a world and a backdrop: players constantly test worlds for aliveness (the NPC pushed, the chicken attacked, the quest-giver revisited after the deed), and every reaction returned is proof-of-world — evidence that actions register somewhere beyond the quest log, which is what makes choices feel real before any mechanical consequence lands (the shopkeeper's changed greeting does more belief-work than the +10 reputation stat that caused it). Reactivity is also the honest form of consequence: branching plots are expensive and countable, but ambient reaction (a line, a look, a price, a locked door) scales — one recorded flag can pay out in twenty cheap acknowledgments, and acknowledgment is most of what players actually wanted (the test isn't 'did the story branch', it's 'did anyone notice'). The craft is a coverage-versus-depth economy: deep reactivity (the region redressed) is authored per-choice at high cost; broad reactivity (barks keyed to reputation, deeds, dress, and history) is systemic and thin — and the strong games interleave them so systemic acknowledgment carries the stretches between authored payoffs. Key decisions: what the world tracks (deeds, reputation axes, specific flagged events — the tracking schema is the reactivity budget's allocation), reaction latency and distribution (immediate local reactions teach the system exists; delayed distant ones — the stranger in the next town who's heard — sell a world where information travels), visibility of the ledger (Fallout's explicit reputation screens versus RDR2's unspoken memory — legible systems invite play, hidden ones invite belief), and permanence policy: whether reactions decay (forgiveness mechanics) or accumulate forever (the unforgiving world where hour-two sins haunt hour sixty). Pitfall: the unnoticing world as broken promise — a game that showcases choice but whose world never mentions your most dramatic deeds (the dragon slain, the town saved, the massacre) teaches players that actions are transactions with the quest log only, and every unacknowledged deed retroactively cheapens the acknowledged ones; reactivity's minimum viable product is not branching — it's noticing, because players forgive a world that can't change around them long before they forgive one that didn't notice them at all.
