Vehicle-combat games build on hardpoint architecture (MechWarrior's tonnage-and-slot loadouts are the deepest tradition — each mount's size, location, and arc defining the machine's fighting geometry; War Thunder and naval games inherit real armament layouts where turret placement is tactical fact), shooters mount guns as crew stations (Halo's Warthog turret, Battlefield's vehicle seats — the mounted gun as multiplayer's trust exercise), base defense emplaces weapons at walls (the manned turret versus the automated one is a whole design fork), and buildable-vehicle games (Crossout, From the Depths) let players author their own mount geometry. Designers use mounts because fixing a weapon to a platform creates geometry gameplay that carried weapons can't: the mount has an arc (the blind spot is a designed vulnerability — flanking a tank is the mount system generating tactics), a position (high mounts see over cover, hull mounts hide behind it), and a dependency (the gun goes where the vehicle goes, so driver and gunner must negotiate — mounted weapons are cooperation machines, splitting movement and fire into different hands and making the vehicle's effectiveness a relationship). Hardpoint systems add the loadout economy: mounts as scarce slots with size classes convert armament into budgeting (the big gun or two small ones — MechWarrior's entire buildcraft), and mount location choices price risk (the ammo stored beside the engine is a decision that explodes later). Emplacement versions trade mobility for position: the fixed gun dominates its arc and dies to whatever walks behind it, teaching positional value in the starkest terms. Key decisions: arc and traverse honesty (limited arcs create maneuver gameplay; 360-degree everything deletes it — the constraint is the content), crew versus automation (manned mounts demand bodies and create roles; automated ones scale and sterilize), mount vulnerability (destroyable weapons that degrade the platform gracefully versus all-or-nothing hulls), and loadout expressiveness where players choose their armament — slot systems whose constraints are tight enough that choices differ. Pitfall: the mounted gun nobody mans — multiplayer vehicles designed around crew stations that pubs leave empty (everyone wants to drive), and single-player mounts whose AI gunners can't hit anything, both reduce the cooperation machine to dead weight; mount systems need solo fallbacks (seat-swapping fluidity, competent AI crew) because a design that only works with a coordinated squad only works in the trailer.
