Trader-genre games build economies on hold size (Elite and X4 price ships partly in cargo tons — the freighter's hold is its identity; Euro Truck Simulator is cargo capacity as premise), survival games extend base storage onto wheels (the packed car in Project Zomboid turning a scavenging run into a moving-day logistics problem, horse saddlebags in Red Dead), extraction shooters make vehicle and stash capacity the loop's economic throttle, and RPG mounts carry the overflow that walking couldn't. Designers put storage on vehicles because it couples two systems into one decision: inventory pressure meets travel planning — the vehicle's capacity sets the expedition's ambition (how long can you stay out, how much can you bring back), so trip planning becomes provisioning gameplay (space for supplies out, loot back — the ratio is the journey's economics), and the vehicle upgrade path gains a non-combat axis that pure-speed progression lacks (the bigger hold is a different power fantasy than the faster engine, and often the more transformative one). Vehicle storage also physicalizes the haul: loot in a truck is spatially real in a way menu-inventory isn't — it can be loaded, seen, stolen, and lost with the vehicle, which raises travel stakes honestly (the wagon ambushed on the road home is a robbery of specific goods, not an abstract penalty) and creates the genre's signature moment of the overloaded return trip, driving slow and paranoid with everything you own aboard. Key decisions: capacity representation (weight limits, slot grids, or visible physical cargo — physical loading is expensive and delivers the strongest fantasy), overload behavior (hard caps versus degraded performance — the truck that sags and slows when stuffed converts capacity from wall into gradient), security coupling (does vehicle loss mean cargo loss — the answer sets travel's stakes), and access ergonomics: transferring between vehicle, character, and base storage is the loop's most-repeated interaction and lives or dies on interface friction. Pitfall: the rolling infinite chest — vehicle storage generous enough to never constrain converts expeditions into vacuum runs (take everything, decide nothing) and deletes the inventory game's decisions wholesale; the hold must be finite enough that packing is choosing, because a trunk that fits everything is a menu, and the whole point was the moment you left something behind.
