Kart racers print the tradeoff triangle on the select screen (Mario Kart's weight classes are the form's teaching edition — heavy karts bully and lumber, light ones dart and get launched), racing sims express stats as physics (the car's numbers are its behavior — drivetrain, weight distribution, and power curves as personality), vehicular combat balances speed-armor-firepower triangles (World of Tanks' light/medium/heavy taxonomy is rock-paper-scissors in steel), and open-world garages spread vehicles across role space (the getaway car, the off-roader, the tank). Designers stat vehicles because the profile is the choice: a garage of vehicles that differ only in appearance is one vehicle with skins, but stat differentiation makes selection strategic (the track with long straights wants the speed build; the brawl wants armor) and creates matchup texture in multiplayer — the fast-fragile versus slow-tough pairing generates chase dynamics, positioning play, and counterpick layers without any additional rules. Stats also make vehicle progression legible (the new car's radar chart against the old one's is an upgrade the player can read) and support fantasy through numbers: handling isn't just a stat, it's whether the machine feels like a scalpel or a freighter, and the stat sheet is a promise the physics must keep. The perception gap is the design's quiet trap: displayed stats and felt behavior diverge easily (the 'handling: 8' that understeers, the speed stat that ignores acceleration), and players trust the wheel over the bar chart every time. Key decisions: stat dimensionality (three legible axes versus a dozen sim parameters — count is audience selection), tradeoff enforcement (are high-speed vehicles necessarily fragile, or can grinding buy the no-compromise machine — enforced tradeoffs preserve the strategy layer; purchasable dominance converts it into a progression reward), class bracketing in competition (stats within bands versus open fields), and stat honesty — the numbers shown must map to the physics felt, with derived stats (lap-time estimates, radar charts) bridging simulation depth and shopper legibility. Pitfall: the solved garage — when one stat profile dominates most contexts (the meta kart, the only-viable tank tier), the differentiated fleet collapses into one correct answer plus decoys, and the selection screen becomes a knowledge test rather than a preference; profiles stay meaningful only while contexts rotate enough that different machines genuinely win different days.
