Vehicles as damageable, repairable property — crumpling bodywork and failing engines, subsystem damage that degrades handling, field repairs with kits and torches, the mechanic's bill after every misadventure.

Racing sims run the honest end (BeamNG's soft-body physics makes damage the whole show; rally games like Dirt price every wall-kiss in stage-time and between-stage repair minutes with limited crew hours), survival and open-world games make the vehicle a maintained companion (Mad Max and Days Gone tie survival to the machine's condition), vehicular combat assigns hit zones (War Thunder's module damage — the engine, the tracks, the crew — makes every shot placement a systems decision), and MMO ships repair at port for gold. Designers damage vehicles because invulnerable transport is weightless: when the car can't be hurt, driving has no stakes and walls are suggestions — but damage converts every traversal into stewardship (speed versus preservation is a live trade on every corner), makes recklessness a priced behavior rather than a free style, and deepens vehicles from tools into relationships (the truck you've repaired twelve times has a biography; its final breakdown is a loss). Subsystem damage is where the mechanic earns depth: aggregate health bars make damage a countdown, but system-specific failure (the radiator leak that overheats, the bent axle that pulls left) creates degraded-operation gameplay — limping the wounded machine home is the genre's most reliable tension sequence, and it converts damage from binary (works/doesn't) into a texture of compromises. Repair economics then close the loop: field repairs as scarce consumables versus workshop repairs as money sinks versus time-based crew repair (rally's service park rationing is repair as strategy — twenty minutes of crew time against forty minutes of damage). Key decisions: damage fidelity tier (cosmetic crumple, performance degradation, subsystem simulation, or full soft-body — each order of magnitude in cost and payoff), repair friction and location (anywhere-instant repairs delete the stakes; workshop-only makes the tow home its own gameplay), permanence questions (can vehicles be totaled — permadeath for machines needs replacement economies), and legibility: the player must be able to diagnose what's wrong (damage reports, visual tells, handling feedback) or degradation reads as the game randomly getting worse. Pitfall: damage as pure annoyance tax — when damage is frequent, repairs are cheap-but-tedious, and degradation is felt only as interface friction (drive to shop, click repair, resume), the system generates errands instead of stakes; vehicle damage works when it changes decisions during play — the risk declined, the route chosen for gentleness, the limp home — because a repair bill without a behavior change is a toll, not a mechanic.
