Modifying vehicles' parts, performance, and appearance — engine swaps and tuning sliders, armor plating bolted to hulls, liveries and body kits, the garage as workshop and wardrobe.

Racing games run the deepest performance versions (Gran Turismo's tuning as engineering education, Forza's slider-and-part matrix where gearing math is real), Need for Speed carried visual customization to cultural-icon status (Underground's body kits defined an era's aesthetic), vehicular combat and survival games armor their rides (Mad Max's Magnum Opus, Crossout's build-a-death-machine as the whole game), Kerbal-likes make vehicle assembly the core loop, and mount/ship systems from Sea of Thieves to Star Citizen sell identity by the hull. Designers open vehicles to modification because the vehicle is a second avatar with better mod surfaces than a body: performance parts create genuine buildcraft (the drift setup and the grip setup are different sports wearing one car), visual customization broadcasts identity at speed and distance (the rival's silhouette on the horizon is characterization — in multiplayer, the car reads before the name does), and the garage loop (race, earn, wrench, repeat) welds progression to expression in one room. Performance-visual duality is the design's axis: pure-performance systems become spreadsheets (optimal builds converge), pure-visual ones become dress-up (fine, but shallow for tuners), and the strong implementations let both matter without letting either invalidate the other — the fastest setup shouldn't force ugliness, the coolest kit shouldn't cost seconds. Tuning depth is an audience decision: sliders with real physics behind them (camber, gearing, downforce) reward automotive literacy and terrify newcomers, so preset tiers atop open tuning is the standard peace treaty. Key decisions: how deep performance modification cuts (part swaps versus continuous tuning versus full assembly), balance policy in competitive contexts (performance ratings, class brackets, or spec-locked events that quarantine the arms race), acquisition economy (parts as loot, purchases, or unlocks — the garage as progression ledger), and livery tooling depth, where layered editors turn playerbases into decal artists and the sharing economy markets the game for free. Pitfall: customization the game never looks at — deep tuning in races too easy to need it, gorgeous liveries in single-player where no one sees them, armor choices against enemies that don't differentiate; customization systems are promises that the differences matter, and every slider the gameplay ignores teaches players the workshop was set dressing.
