D&D's eight schools structure caster identity (the illusionist and the necromancer are different fantasies wearing the same class), elemental systems run from Pokémon's type chart (eighteen elements whose interaction matrix is the game's strategic core) through Genshin Impact's elemental reactions (pyro plus hydro vaporizes — combat as chemistry) to Magicka's five-element combining chaos, and MMO talent trees canonized fire/frost/arcane as build archetypes. Designers taxonomize magic because categories do enormous silent work: schools give casters build identity (specializing is choosing a fantasy, not just stats), elements give combat a rock-paper-scissors interaction layer that makes enemy variety meaningful (the fire mage's dread of the fire-immune zone is content the designer got free), reaction systems make party composition combinatorial (Genshin's teams are element equations), and the taxonomy itself teaches — players who learn 'frost controls, fire bursts, shock chains' can read new content through the grammar. The school structure also rations power by theme: designers balance whole categories (nerf frost, buff necromancy) and gate identity behind opportunity cost when specialization forecloses rival schools. Key decisions: interaction matrix complexity (Pokémon's eighteen-type chart is memorization scripture; three-element triangles are learnable in one fight — depth versus accessibility, stated in chart size), whether schools are flavor or physics (does fire actually burn, spread, and melt, or just deal red damage — elemental systems earn their names through simulation), and specialization hardness — can the master of fire cast any frost at all. Pitfall: elements distinguished only by damage-type resistance lookups — when fire and lightning differ solely in which enemies resist them, the taxonomy is a paint catalog, and players correctly optimize for the biggest number while ignoring the theme; schools live when each carries a distinct verb (burn spreads, frost slows, lightning chains), because identity that doesn't change decisions is just a spell icon's color scheme.
