D&D's sorcerer metamagic is the source (Baldur's Gate 3 implements it as sorcery-point spending, and it defines the class's identity against the wizard), Pathfinder's feat-based metamagic runs deeper, and ARPG support-gem systems like Path of Exile's are metamagic generalized into the game's entire buildcraft engine — every skill reshaped by socketed modifiers. Designers add metamagic because it multiplies a spell list without authoring new spells: one fireball times five modifiers is a family of tools, and the choice of how to cast becomes as expressive as what to cast — the quickened heal in a desperate turn, the twinned haste enabling a whole strategy. It also gives casters a mid-combat resource decision layer beyond slot management. Key decisions: which modifiers exist and their costs (twinning is famously the balance problem — doubling a strong single-target spell scales with everything printed later), whether metamagic is chosen at cast time (flexible, fiddly) or pre-configured (Path of Exile's socketed commitment), and how the UI keeps modified casting from becoming a submenu slog. Pitfall: dominant-modifier collapse — when one metamagic option is clearly strongest, every caster converges on it and the customization layer becomes a tax on reaching the correct answer; costs need tuning so that situations, not spreadsheets, decide which modifier fires.
