Thief invented the grammar (its light gem HUD showing exactly how lit you are remains the genre's cleanest instrument), Splinter Cell built its identity on shooting out lights, and modern stealth from Metal Gear through Styx tracks light level alongside movement and sound. Designers make light mechanical because it turns the level's lighting design into gameplay terrain: every lamp is now a decision (douse it and guards notice; leave it and cross exposed), patrol routes read differently against the shadow map, and the player develops a predator's eye for darkness that reshapes how they see all virtual spaces. Light also gives stealth its risk gradient — unlike binary cover, illumination is continuous, supporting the crouched shuffle along the shadow's edge. Key decisions: how the player reads their own visibility (Thief's gem, screen-edge effects, or trusting the player's eye — the last is immersive but fails on bright TVs), whether lights are player-manipulable (extinguishable, destroyable, and at what cost or noise), and how sophisticated the detection model is versus how sophisticated it feels. Pitfall: mismatch between rendered and mechanical light — when a spot looks dark but counts as lit, or the reverse, every detection becomes an argument with the game; the simulation can be simple, but it must agree with what the screen shows.
