Height as a tactical and traversal dimension — high ground bonuses, cliffs that gate movement, multi-level maps where the Z-axis matters as much as X and Y.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 and XCOM grant flat damage or aim bonuses from high ground, making elevation the first thing players read on any battlefield; shooters like Titanfall and Apex Legends build movement identity on vertical traversal; and Breath of the Wild's climb-anything rule turns terrain height into an exploration economy of stamina. Designers use verticality because it multiplies a map's tactical surface without expanding its footprint — a two-story building is four fights in one location — and because height advantages create positional goals that produce movement, counterplay, and territory value. Key decisions: whether high ground grants explicit bonuses (legible but dominant) or just sightline advantages (subtle but deep), how vertical movement is priced (jump costs, climb stamina, ladders as chokepoints), and how the camera and UI keep multi-level fights readable. Pitfall: verticality the camera can't serve — if players constantly fight the view to understand who is above whom, every tactical benefit drowns in interface friction.
