CONSTRUCTION TIME

Buildings and upgrades take real or in-game time to complete rather than appearing instantly, forcing players to plan ahead and sequence their build orders.

StarCraft's entire competitive opening theory rests on construction timings, XCOM makes facility build times a strategic layer where excavating the right room too late loses the campaign, and mobile city-builders stretch timers into monetization. Designers use construction time to create commitment — starting a barracks is a prediction about the future, and opponents or events can punish wrong predictions. It also paces the game's power curve: instant construction collapses strategy into a shopping spree. Key decisions: whether time can be bought down (workers, resources, premium currency), whether construction is interruptible or vulnerable while in progress, and how visible enemy construction is to opponents. Pitfall: timers that outlast the player's decision horizon become dead waiting — if there's nothing meaningful to do while the building finishes, the timer isn't creating strategy, just delay.
