Mass Effect 2 built its entire structure around loyalty missions — each one deepens a squadmate and directly affects who survives the finale — and Baldur's Gate 3 threads companion arcs through the whole campaign with romance and betrayal branches. Designers use companion quests to convert flat party members into people the player protects, and to reward long-term investment with content that feels personal rather than systemic. Key decisions: whether quests gate mechanical rewards (loyalty powers, gear) or stay purely narrative, whether missing a quest has permanent consequences, and how quests interleave with the main plot's pacing. Pitfall: companion quests that all follow the same template (talk, fetch, confront the past) start feeling like a checklist — the memorable ones intersect with the main plot or force choices the player can't take back.
