Abilities that store multiple uses — charges regenerate over time and stack up to a cap, letting players spend them in bursts or bank them for emergencies — replacing the single-cooldown rhythm with an ammunition-like economy.

Overwatch's Tracer holds three blink charges: spending all three is an aggressive commitment, holding one back is her escape insurance, and that tension defines her skill ceiling. Dota 2 applies charge systems to heroes and items where stored stacks convert waiting time into spendable power. Designers use charges to deepen a cooldown into a resource decision — one cooldown asks 'now or later?', charges ask 'how many, and how many do I keep?' — and to smooth ability availability: a missed opportunity isn't a full cooldown lost when another charge sits ready. Charges also let designers tune burst potential and sustained uptime independently, which single cooldowns can't separate. Key decisions: cap size (two charges is a meaningful choice; five is a fuel tank), whether regeneration runs concurrently for all missing charges or one at a time, and how charge state is communicated at a glance under pressure. Pitfall: charges hoarded forever — if there's no pressure to spend, players sit at cap and the system degrades into a cooldown with extra UI; good charge design makes sitting at maximum feel like waste.
