GAME MECHANICS HOARD

AURAS/FIELDS

Persistent area effects centered on a character or point — buffing allies inside the radius, damaging or hindering enemies, altering the space itself — that turn positioning into an ongoing tactical layer.

Diablo II's Paladin is built on toggled auras (Might, Holy Freeze, Conviction) that passively affect everything nearby and define entire party compositions, and Path of Exile grows that idea into an aura economy where builds reserve most of their mana to stack auras on themselves and allies. Designers use auras to make support roles playable without constant button-pressing, to create spatial decisions in combat (stay in the circle, spread out, body-block the enemy field), and to give melee-range characters passive board presence. Key decisions: whether auras cost something ongoing (reserved resource, upkeep) or are free toggles, how radius and stacking rules work when multiple auras overlap, and — critically — how effects are communicated visually, since five stacked aura graphics turn the screen to soup. Pitfall: invisible power — an aura the player forgets is running is a stat stick, not a mechanic; the good ones create moments where someone repositions specifically because of the field.
