ACCESSORIES

Equippable items in slots separate from weapons and armor — rings, amulets, trinkets, charms — that grant passive bonuses or new behaviors without changing the character's visual silhouette or core loadout.

Terraria builds much of its character customization on accessory slots (wings, boots, emblems, and dozens of combinable effects), and Dark Souls limits players to a few ring slots whose trade-offs define entire builds. Designers use accessories to add build depth cheaply: each accessory is usually just a stat modifier or a single scripted effect, so a large catalog costs far less than new weapons with animations and models. They also serve as a reward tier for exploration and side content that doesn't disturb the main equipment progression. Key decisions: how many slots to offer (few slots make each choice agonizing; many slots invite set-and-forget stacking), whether effects stack or share exclusivity rules, and whether accessories are found, crafted, or bought. Pitfall: accessories that just add flat stats become invisible bookkeeping — the memorable ones change behavior (double jump, life on kill, immunity to a hazard) rather than nudging numbers.
