WORLD MAP

The macro-scale map as interface and place — the overworld screen connecting locations, the atlas view where continents render as geography, the zoomed-out layer where travel, planning, and world-comprehension happen.

JRPG tradition built the walkable world map (Final Fantasy's shrunken continents where your party towers over mountains — the overworld as both travel layer and world-scale storytelling), open-world games render the map as full-screen interface (Skyrim's 3D atlas, Breath of the Wild's topographic sheet whose contour lines are genuinely readable navigation data), strategy games ARE their maps (the Paradox map as the entire game surface — map modes layering data like GIS software), node-based designs abstract the world to connected points (Slay the Spire's branching route, Mario's world maps), and fog-of-war reveals make the map itself a progression track (the blank atlas filling in as exploration's ledger). Designers invest in world maps because the map is where the world becomes comprehensible: moment-to-moment play happens at street scale, but understanding — where places relate, what's unexplored, how the journey fits together — happens at map scale, so the map is the player's mental model made visible and shared (the design of the map is the design of how players think about the world), and map-reading itself is gameplay: route planning, terrain assessment, gap-spotting (the suspicious empty region on a filled map is a quest the cartography assigned). The map's fantasy register matters too: the hand-drawn atlas, the satellite view, and the incomplete sketch each promise different worlds (map aesthetics are worldbuilding — Elden Ring's map fragments make the atlas itself a treasure). The interface-versus-place spectrum defines implementations: pure-interface maps (fast travel menus with geography) optimize convenience, walkable overworlds make the macro scale a place with its own encounters and secrets (the JRPG overworld's random battles and hidden islands), and the middle path — maps dense with interactive annotation (pins, routes, filters) — makes the atlas a planning workspace. Key decisions: information density and layering (map modes, filters, and zoom-dependent detail — the strategy-game lesson is that one map serving many questions needs many skins), revelation mechanics (pre-revealed atlases versus exploration-fill versus purchased charts — how the map fills is the exploration loop's pacing), annotation and planning tooling (the map as workspace versus display), and fidelity honesty — the map's promises (that river is crossable, that path connects) must match the world, because every map-versus-terrain lie erodes the tool's authority. Pitfall: the map replacing the world — when the atlas is so information-rich that players navigate exclusively by it (eyes on the minimap corner, world reduced to peripheral vision), the map has cannibalized the experience it was built to support; the healthiest map designs push attention back out (sparse minimaps, map-consulting as deliberate act, worlds legible enough to navigate by sight), because the map should be where you plan the journey, not where you take it.
