Physics-construction games make it the core discipline (Kerbal's center-of-mass versus center-of-thrust is rocketry's first lesson — the flipping rocket teaches balance better than any tutorial; Besiege machines shake apart from asymmetry; bridge builders live on load distribution), stacking games distill it to pure play (Tricky Towers and Jenga-likes where equilibrium is the whole game), delivery-and-carry designs weight their cargo consequentially (Death Stranding's load balancing is the game — Sam's stagger under a lopsided pack converts inventory management into moment-to-moment motor control), and encumbrance systems across RPGs run the abstract version (carry weight as inventory pressure). Designers simulate balance because it's physics the body already knows: every player has carried something heavy, stacked something badly, and felt the tipping point — so balance mechanics require zero tutorialization while delivering deep interaction (the intuition is pre-installed; the game just gives it consequences), and they produce the most honest failures in gaming: the tower that topples fell because of exactly where you put the piece, a causality so visible that blame lands cleanly on the player and comedy lands cleanly on physics (the balance failure is gaming's most reliable slapstick — Besiege's collapsing contraptions entertain even when they fail, which converts iteration from frustration into show). Balance also physicalizes loadout decisions in ways menus can't: Death Stranding's insight was making inventory spatial and dynamic — where the cargo sits matters, the mass responds to terrain and momentum, and packing well becomes a skill expressed continuously while moving rather than once at the equip screen. Key decisions: simulation honesty versus assistance (real center-of-mass physics with stabilization aids — auto-arrange buttons, balance meters — serves both the fantasy and the impatient), consequence texture (staggering, slowing, and recoverable wobbles versus binary topple — gradients let players ride the edge, which is where the gameplay lives), feedback channels (the lean, the wobble, the controller rumble that says 'too far' — balance must be felt approaching, not just discovered at collapse), and scope discipline: which systems care about mass (a game where everything topples is a game about nothing else). Pitfall: balance as invisible arithmetic — encumbrance implemented as a hidden stat threshold (fine at 99 units, immobile at 101) takes the mechanic's whole virtue (embodied intuition, visible causality) and replaces it with menu math; if the game says weight, the player should see and feel the weight, because a balance system without physicality is just a number arguing with your backpack.
