Effective distance as a weapon property — the spear outreaching the dagger, rifles with damage falloff curves, minimum ranges that create dead zones, the tactical grid's 2-range archer safe behind the 1-range wall.

Turn-based tactics runs range as clean integers (Fire Emblem's 1-range/2-range distinction structures its whole combat triangle-adjacent metagame — the archer's safety and the mage's counter-window are range arithmetic; Into the Breach's exact attack shapes), shooters express it as falloff curves (the SMG's damage evaporating past twenty meters is class balance disguised as ballistics — range bands are why loadout roles exist), strategy games price artillery's reach against its blindness up close (the minimum-range dead zone as designed vulnerability), and melee games measure reach in animation hitboxes (the spear's poke versus the dagger's rush — Souls-like spacing is range gameplay at the inches scale). Designers differentiate range because distance is combat's fundamental resource, and range profiles determine how that resource converts to advantage: the long-range unit wants the gap maintained, the short-range one wants it closed, so every mixed engagement is a spacing negotiation — movement becomes meaningful because position relative to range thresholds is the fight — and army/loadout composition becomes a coverage problem (the force needs answers at every band, and its gaps are its tactics written in advance). Range asymmetries also create combat's cleanest counters without rock-paper-scissors labels: outranging is a strategy (kiting as the eternal dance), and minimum ranges or dead zones give even the longest reach an approach vector (the artillery hugged, the archer rushed — counterplay lives where the range profile has holes). The legibility spectrum matters: tactics grids show exact ranges (planning-grade information), while shooters bury falloff in feel and community spreadsheets — a design choice about whether range knowledge is read or learned. Key decisions: range band count and distinctness (two bands make crisp roles; continuous curves make organic-but-murky ones), threshold visibility (range rings, attack previews, falloff indicators — invisible range math in games with lethal consequences externalizes learning to wikis), minimum ranges and dead zones as counterplay architecture, and interaction with vision/terrain — range beyond sight (indirect fire) is its own mechanic tier demanding spotters and creating combined-arms dependencies. Pitfall: range dominance without approach mechanics — when the longest range wins and the map offers no closing tools (cover, smoke, flanks, charges), every fight is decided at deployment and the melee half of the roster is a museum exhibit; range differentiation only generates tactics when the game funds the approach, because the spear beating the dagger at reach is a mechanic, but the dagger having no path inside is a verdict.
