Making water safe as a survival loop — dirty water demanding boiling or filtering, purification tablets and stills, contamination that sickens the desperate drinker, clean water as manufactured resource rather than found one.

Hardcore survival games run the full chain (Green Hell's parasite-laden streams teach the boil ritual; The Long Dark melts snow then boils it — two fuel costs per drink; DayZ and SCUM price waterborne illness into every pond), colony sims industrialize it (Oxygen Not Included's water-purification loops are half the game's plumbing; Frostpunk-likes and Timberborn treat clean water as infrastructure), and post-apocalyptic settings make purity itself the currency (Fallout's rad-water and Project Purity as plot; Waterworld economies where the filter is wealth). Designers insert purification between thirst and its answer because it converts a meter into a production chain: raw thirst is just a timer (find water, click drink), but contamination adds a processing step that creates real gameplay — fuel for boiling, containers for storage, stills and filters as craftable infrastructure — so hydration becomes a supply line with failure points rather than a pickup, and the desperate-drink decision (sick tomorrow or dehydrated today) becomes survival's most honest dilemma, a gamble where both options cost and the player's situation sets the odds. Purification also grounds base-building in need (the rain catcher and boiling station are among survival's most satisfying early builds because they automate a genuine anxiety), gives fire and fuel systems a recurring customer, and at colony scale, turns water into a full input-output economy — polluted water as byproduct, purification as throughput problem, the closed loop as engineering achievement. Key decisions: contamination legibility (can players tell dirty from clean — visual murk, testing tools, or learned source-rules; invisible contamination that strikes randomly reads as dice, not danger), illness severity and treatment cost (the punishment must make purification worth its friction without making one mistake a death spiral), method ladder (drink-risky, boil-cheap, filter-durable, still-automated — a progression from ritual to infrastructure), and integration with the wider survival economy: purification competing for the same fuel, time, and containers as cooking and warmth is what makes it a decision rather than a chore. Pitfall: purification as solved ritual — once the boil-everything habit is automatic and costless, the mechanic is a click-tax on every drink (the danger never bites, the step never varies); the system stays alive through scarcity pressure on its inputs (fuel worth rationing, containers worth choosing) and situations that tempt the shortcut, because the mechanic's entire drama lives in the moment someone drinks bad water on purpose.
