UNLOCK TIERS

Content organized into sequential access levels — rank brackets unlocking equipment tranches, tech eras gating building generations, license tiers opening vehicle classes, the numbered ladder where reaching tier N opens everything N contains.

Progression-heavy multiplayer canonized it (Call of Duty's weapon-level tracks and rank unlocks structure hundreds of hours into visible next-things; racing games gate car classes by license tests — Gran Turismo's licenses as tiered skill certification), strategy games phrase it as ages and eras (Age of Empires' age-ups are unlock tiers as dramatic beats — the whole civilization graduates at once), battle passes stack cosmetic tiers by design, and roguelite meta-progression ladders (Hades' heat, Vampire Survivors' unlock cascade) tier their reveals. Designers tier unlocks because staged access solves multiple problems with one structure: complexity pacing (the newcomer faces tier-one's manageable option set, not the full catalog — tiers are a tutorial schedule wearing a reward system's clothes), sustained motivation (the next tier is always visible, always finite, always nearly reachable — goal-gradient psychology in ladder form), and content lifespan (the same catalog lasts longer released in stages, and designers control the drip). The tier boundary is also a natural celebration point: crossing into a new era/rank/class is a designed high — new toys arrive as a batch, and the batch-reveal beats item-by-item trickle for felt progress. Tier structure meanwhile encodes a curriculum: what's in tier one is a statement about fundamentals, and good tier design sequences learning (the sniper rifle at rank 20 assumes 19 ranks of positioning lessons). Key decisions: advancement currency (XP-time, skill gates like license tests, achievement counts, or purchase — time-tiers reward persistence, skill-tiers certify competence, and mixing them muddles what a tier means), tier size and spacing (front-loaded fast tiers hook, stretched late tiers retain-or-exhaust — the pacing curve is the retention model made visible), within-tier freedom (linear tracks versus tier-wide choice — choosing which tier-3 unlock comes first restores agency the ladder removes), and catch-up mechanics for latecomers to mature games. Pitfall: tiers as competitive paywalls-in-time — when higher tiers hold strictly better tools (not different, better), every match between tier 5 and tier 40 is decided partly at the loadout screen, and the progression system that motivates the grinder is experienced by the newcomer as institutionalized disadvantage; tiered power demands either sidegrade discipline (new options, not upgrades) or matchmaking that respects the ladder it built.
