Tower defense is placement as genre (from Desktop TD's maze-building freedom through Bloons' fixed-path optimization to Kingdom Rush's spot-based economy — the genre's whole strategy is where), hybrid designs embed the same decision in other frames (Dungeon Defenders and Orcs Must Die place defenses then fight alongside them; Sanctum shoots from inside its own grid), survival and factory bases ring themselves in gun emplacements (They Are Billions' towers, Factorio's wall-and-turret perimeter as throughput problem), and shooter deployables compress it to one sentry's spot. Designers center placement because it's strategy expressed in pure geometry: a turret's value is almost entirely positional — range circles against path curvature, overlapping fields of fire, the corner that doubles a tower's exposure time — so the decision engages spatial reasoning at a depth stat comparisons never reach, and mistakes are visible in space (the gap in coverage is right there, drawn in the enemy's survival). Placement also front-loads strategy attractively: the thinking happens in the calm before the wave, then the wave grades your answer — a plan-then-audit loop with built-in suspense, where watching the defense work (or leak) is the payoff for cognition already spent. Maze-building variants add a second layer: when turrets block pathing, placement designs the enemy's route and the killzone simultaneously — the player builds both the question and the answer. Key decisions: placement freedom (fixed sockets are balanced and legible; free placement enables mazing, creativity, and degenerate corners — the genre's oldest fork), economic reversibility (full-refund repositioning invites experimentation; sunk-cost placement makes each choice weighty — and mid-wave selling is a whole tactical dimension), turret interaction depth (buff towers, combo effects, and coverage synergies reward composition beyond coverage), and information support: range previews, path projections, and damage-dealt statistics are how players learn placement rather than guess it. Pitfall: solved maps — when each level has one known optimal build order, placement collapses from spatial reasoning into transcription, and the genre's cognitive appeal evaporates; enemy variety that reprices positions (fliers ignoring the maze, shielded units demanding specific damage types), randomized waves, and multi-path maps are what keep where an open question rather than a memorized answer.
