Buildings requiring physical support — beams that sag past their span limits, walls bearing load, unsupported structures collapsing, integrity systems that make architecture obey gravity.

Valheim's support system is the mainstream benchmark (wood colored by stress from blue to red, teaching cantilever limits through color — tall builds need cores of stone and iron), Medieval Engineers and bridge-builders (Poly Bridge's whole genre) simulate load paths honestly, Tears of the Kingdom's contraptions flex and fail by physics, mining games make unsupported tunnels cave in (Deep Rock's terrain, classic Minecraft mods), and Besiege's machines shake themselves apart as the core comedy-challenge. Designers impose structural rules because they convert building from painting into engineering: without support limits, construction is decoration placed in space, but with them every ambitious build is a solved problem — the tower needs a core, the bridge needs trusses, the overhang needs counterweight — and completing one delivers the engineer's pride that snap-together systems can't counterfeit. Integrity systems also generate honest failure drama (the collapse mid-construction is a lesson written in falling lumber), make material tiers meaningful beyond hit points (iron's value is its span), and produce architecture that looks believable automatically, because it had to be. The teaching interface is everything: Valheim's stress-color gradient is the pattern's gold standard — the physics are visible, so players learn structural intuition by building rather than by dying. Key decisions: simulation fidelity (true load physics versus distance-from-ground heuristics — heuristics are predictable and performant, real physics are richer and exploitable), failure behavior (gradual sagging warnings versus instant cascade collapse — cascades are memorable and rage-inducing in careful proportion), visibility tooling (stress overlays, support previews before placement), and repair-after-partial-collapse flow. Pitfall: opaque integrity math — when builders can't see why the beam failed or predict what will hold before spending materials, structural rules read as arbitrary demolition taxes; the system teaches engineering only if the physics are inspectable, because a collapse the player can diagnose is a lesson, and one they can't is a mugging.
