GAME MECHANICS HOARD

SOFT VS HARD CURRENCY

The two-tier monetization economy — soft currency earned abundantly by playing (gold, credits) and hard/premium currency bought with real money (gems, crystals), each with distinct stores and exchange asymmetries.

The architecture underpins free-to-play at large: Clash of Clans' gems, Genshin Impact's primogems (earnable slowly, buyable instantly — the dual-faucet design that lets the same currency serve grinders and spenders), Fortnite's V-Bucks as pure purchased tender, and nearly every mobile and live-service economy since. Designers split currencies because one money can't serve two masters: the play-economy needs generous faucets (rewards must flow or sessions feel barren) while the revenue-economy needs scarcity (purchases must matter), and a single currency forces choosing — but two tiers firewall them, letting soft currency inflate freely as engagement's wage while hard currency holds its price as money's proxy. The tier boundary is the entire design: what's soft-buyable defines the free game, what's hard-gated defines the business, and the exchange direction (hard converts down to soft, never up) is the one-way valve protecting revenue. Time-versus-money is the honest frame — hard currency's real product is skipped waiting, which is why the model pairs so tightly with timers and energy systems. Key decisions: earnable hard currency and its drip rate (Genshin's earnable primogems build goodwill and daily habits; pure-purchase currencies are cleaner but colder), price-point obfuscation ethics (odd-sized gem packs that never divide evenly into item costs are the pattern regulators circle), and what hard currency may touch — cosmetics-only keeps competitive integrity; power crosses into pay-to-win, the line communities police ferociously. Pitfall: the conversion-math trap — when players can compute the real-dollar price of every reward (this quest paid me eleven cents), the abstraction layer collapses and both currencies read as receipts; the dual system works while soft rewards feel like play's wage, and it dies the day they feel like wage theft.
