SLIDING PUZZLES

Puzzles about moving pieces through constrained space — the fifteen-puzzle's tile shuffling, sokoban block-pushing, ice-floor sliding where movement continues until collision, klotski-style escape arrangements.

The lineage is ancient and everywhere: Zelda's ice caverns institutionalized slide-until-you-hit-something movement as dungeon vocabulary, Pokémon's ice gyms traumatized a generation, sokoban (and its descendant Baba Is You, which slides the rules themselves) built the push-block genre, mobile stores overflow with unblock-the-car klotski clones, and Stephen's Sausage Roll elevated block-sliding into the hardcore puzzle canon. Designers reach for sliding constraints because they transform trivial space into hostile logic: walking to a destination is not a puzzle, but reaching it when every step slides to the wall — or when the block only pushes, never pulls — makes the space itself the opponent, and the player must think in trajectories and end-states rather than paths. The forms share a deep property: moves are cheap but states are treacherous (one wrong push wedges the block in a corner forever), so the real skill is lookahead — seeing three slides ahead, recognizing dead states before entering them — which is planning distilled to its purest testable form. Sokoban's irreversibility (pushes can't be unpushed) versus ice-sliding's reversibility (slide back the way you came) mark the family's two temperaments: one punishes commitment, the other only tests navigation. Key decisions: undo and reset generosity (irreversible-state puzzles without undo are rage generators; with infinite undo they're pure thought — the choice defines the audience), dead-state detectability (players should be able to learn what 'stuck' looks like), and scale discipline — sliding puzzles fatigue faster than most forms, and the twenty-third ice floor is nobody's favorite. Pitfall: sliding as movement tax — when the mechanic gates ordinary traversal rather than housing designed puzzles (the ice field you cross repeatedly on every errand), the delightful constraint curdles into commute friction; sliding logic belongs in set-piece rooms with designed solutions, not sprinkled on the overworld's floor.
