Shield/barrier systems

A protective energy field absorbs damage before health, typically regenerating after a delay when the player avoids further hits, encouraging a poke-retreat-regen combat rhythm. Halo's recharging shield defined the modern shooter's regenerating-defense standard, and Destiny 2 builds entire subclass identities around shield mechanics (overshields, barrier champions). Designers use shield/barrier systems to create a forgiving buffer that softens the first mistakes in an engagement, to encourage tactical retreats as a valid response to taking damage (rather than always pushing forward), and to differentiate damage types (shield-piercing weapons that bypass the buffer entirely, as with Destiny's champion mods). Key decisions: regeneration delay and rate, whether shields block all damage types equally or have specific vulnerabilities, visual/audio feedback distinguishing shield hits from health hits, and how shields interact with crowd control or status effects. Pitfall: shields that regenerate too quickly remove meaningful risk from firefights, while shields that never regenerate in combat make the mechanic indistinguishable from ordinary armor — the regen timing is the whole design lever.
