Shelter building

Players construct defensible, functional living spaces from gathered materials — walls, roofs, doors, storage, defenses — as protection and a base of operations. Valheim, Rust, and The Forest make base-building a central pillar: shelter provides safety from weather, enemies, and night, and becomes a personal, evolving home. Designers use shelter building to give gathering and crafting a purpose, to create a sense of ownership and investment, to provide a safe hub that paces expeditions, and to enable creative expression. Key decisions: building granularity (freeform piece-by-piece versus snap-to-grid), structural integrity systems (does the base need support, as in Valheim?), what shelter protects against (weather, raids, spoilage), defensibility versus decoration, and destructibility (can enemies or other players breach it?). Pitfall: building systems that are fiddly to place and edit turn the creative fantasy into a fight with the controls, while shelter that provides no meaningful protection makes the whole effort pointless — the reward for building must be tangibly safer and more capable than going without.
