Diablo and Path of Exile institutionalized the league reset (every three-ish months, a fresh economy, a fresh ladder, and a mechanic twist — the reset is the content), ranked ladders across MOBAs and shooters season their MMR with soft resets, battle passes bind cosmetic progression to the seasonal calendar, and MMO seasonal servers (WoW Classic's fresh starts) sell the level-one town square packed with strangers again. Designers reset because accumulation eventually strangles its own game: mature economies inflate until drops mean nothing, ladders calcify until ranks reflect hours more than skill, and the power gap between veterans and newcomers becomes a wall no one crosses — the reset amnesties all of it, restoring scarcity (that early-league rare is exciting again), compressing the population into the same progression band (the racing crowd, the economy's price discovery, the level-up rush all happen communally), and giving lapsed players a socially sanctioned re-entry point where their absence doesn't equal deficit. The reset also lets designers experiment safely: league mechanics are trials that permanent economies couldn't survive. The standard architecture — seasonal content folding into a permanent legacy realm afterward — softens the deletion into a migration. Key decisions: reset scope (full character wipes versus rank-only soft resets — how much accumulated identity survives), cadence against content production (seasons outliving their novelty breed churn; too-fast cycles exhaust), and legacy handling — what transfers, what memorializes, what evaporates. Pitfall: resets that punish attachment — players who bond with characters and stockpiles experience wipes as theft unless the culture and framing establish impermanence upfront; seasonal design works when the reset is the promise (fresh race, fair start) rather than the fine print, because the same deletion reads as liberation or betrayal depending entirely on what players believed they were building.
