GAME MECHANICS HOARD

SCARCITY/ABUNDANCE CYCLES

Resource availability oscillating over time — seasons of plenty and famine, boom-bust market cycles, drought years testing stockpiles built in wet ones.

Don't Starve's winter is the canonical brutal teacher (autumn's abundance exists to be banked against the freeze), Timberborn alternates wet and dry seasons as its core rhythm, Frostpunk escalates cold snaps against coal reserves, farming sims cycle crop calendars, and dynamic-economy games (X4, EVE) run emergent boom-bust waves through player and NPC markets. Designers cycle scarcity because constant abundance and constant shortage are both flat: abundance without a coming winter is a warehouse simulator, scarcity without relief is a death march — but the oscillation between them creates the strategic dimension of time preference, where the entire game becomes 'how much of today do you sacrifice for tomorrow?' Cycles convert stockpiling from hoarding instinct into designed gameplay (the granary is a bet on the future), give campaigns a breathing rhythm of preparation and endurance phases that pace themselves, and teach the genre's deepest lesson — that surviving the winter was decided in the summer. Predictability is the master dial: known cycles (calendar seasons) reward planning and punish only negligence, while unpredictable ones (random droughts) demand insurance-thinking and buffer margins, a different and crueler skill. Key decisions: cycle length against the player's planning horizon (seasons players can't prepare for are ambushes, not cycles), amplitude — how deep the trough bites versus how much the peak overflows, signaling (forecasts, omens, gradual onset) that makes preparation a skill, and whether player action can dampen or worsen cycles (irrigation, market manipulation). Pitfall: solved cycles — once the checklist for winter is known, each cycle is homework with a season skin; escalating amplitudes, occasional anomalies, and cycles that interact (a dry summer shrinking the harvest before a long winter) keep preparation a judgment rather than a recipe.
