Anno and the Settlers lineage run economies that are conversion graphs end to end, Frostpunk's generator is coal-into-survival as the game's beating heart, Offworld Trading Company makes conversion rates themselves the battlefield (its market is a weapon), and idle games chain conversions into the genre's exponential ladders. Designers build conversion mechanisms because they make surpluses meaningful and shortages solvable — at a price: without conversion, an economy is parallel stockpiles where excess wood is dead weight; with it, every resource is potentially every other resource, and the exchange rate becomes the strategic question (convert now at a bad rate, or hold and risk the shortage biting first?). Conversion also lets designers tune scarcity indirectly — adjusting one rate reprices entire strategies — and creates the arbitrage and specialization gameplay economic designs live on: produce what your position makes cheap, convert into what you actually need. The rate structure defines the feel: fixed rates are legible infrastructure, dynamic market rates are a living opponent, and lossy conversion (the standard) makes direct production always better than exchange, keeping conversion a safety valve rather than the economy's center. Key decisions: conversion efficiency (loss rates set how punishing mono-production is), instant exchange versus time-and-infrastructure conversion (buildings that convert make it spatial; menus make it financial), and rate visibility and stability — players plan against rates, and volatile hidden ones convert strategy into gambling. Pitfall: the universal-currency collapse — when everything converts freely and cheaply into everything, distinct resources are one number wearing costumes, and the entire multi-resource design (with its shortages, trade-offs, and logistics) quietly reduces to a single bank balance; conversion friction isn't inconvenience, it's what keeps resources meaning something.
