REAL-TIME COMBAT

Combat resolving continuously in live time — attacks, dodges, and decisions executed as they happen, with reflexes, spacing, and timing as first-class skills alongside build and strategy.

The spectrum is the genre map: Dark Souls' deliberate commitment-based exchanges, Devil May Cry's frame-precise expression, Diablo's click-storm, MMO tab-target rotations (real-time strategy wearing action's clothes), and hybrid designs like FF7 Remake or real-time-with-pause CRPGs that blend live action with tactical interruption. Choosing real-time is choosing what the player's body does: turn-based combat tests decisions, real-time tests decisions under motor pressure — and that changes everything downstream, from encounter design (enemies telegraph in animation-time, not menu-time) to difficulty (tuning reaction windows rather than stat math) to audience (execution demands filter players that contemplation doesn't). Real-time's unique currencies are spacing and timing: position is continuous and always at stake, animations are commitments with windup and recovery (the animation-commitment dial runs from Souls' locked swings to Ninja Gaiden's cancel-everything), and the second-to-second texture — dodge windows, punish openings, poise exchanges — is where the genre's feel lives. Key decisions: animation commitment versus cancel freedom (deliberation versus expression), how much builds and numbers can compensate for execution (the RPG blend question — can grinding beat the boss your hands can't), and camera/lock-on architecture, the unsung system that determines whether multi-enemy real-time combat is legible at all. Pitfall: real-time pacing with turn-based information design — combat that flows live but communicates through health bars, floating numbers, and buff icons the player must read mid-dodge splits attention fatally; real-time combat must speak through animation, sound, and silhouette, because in live time, anything that demands reading is something the player will be hit while reading.
