Rage/berserk mode
A temporary state of heightened aggression and power — increased damage, speed, or a transformed moveset — usually triggered by taking damage, low health, or building a meter, that trades defense or control for offense. God of War's Spartan Rage and Diablo III's Barbarian's Wrath-fueled abilities both give players a high-risk, high-reward burst window that rewards aggressive, all-in play. Designers use rage mechanics to create dramatic power spikes and comeback potential (a losing fight can be turned around by rage), to reward players who take risks or play aggressively, and to add a resource-management layer around when to pop the mode for maximum effect. Key decisions: activation trigger (building via damage taken/dealt, or a straightforward cooldown), whether rage mode reduces defenses as a tradeoff, duration and whether it's extendable through continued action, and visual/audio feedback that sells the transformation's power fantasy. Pitfall: a rage mode with no real tradeoff (pure upside, free power) removes the risk/reward tension that makes activating it a meaningful decision rather than an automatic button press whenever available.
