PULL/GRAPPLE

Grappling and pulling as movement and combat verbs — hookshots that reel you to walls, grapples that yank enemies to you, tethers that swing you across gaps.

Zelda's hookshot founded the traversal lineage, Just Cause and Spider-Man games make grapple-swinging their entire locomotion identity, Doom Eternal's meat hook converts enemies into mobility anchors, Titanfall 2's grapple is competitive movement tech, and 'get over here' — Mortal Kombat's Scorpion — defined the pull-them-to-you combat verb. Designers love grapples because they solve traversal's fun problem in one mechanic: a grapple converts empty vertical and horizontal space into playground (any surface becomes a route), adds physics expressiveness (swing momentum rewards timing and release-point mastery), and in combat collapses the distance between you and the fight on your terms — puller's choice of bringing yourself to them or them to you is a whole tactical dialect. Grapples also solve level-design economy: one grapple point re-prices an entire room's geometry. Key decisions: what's grappleable (designated points are legible and authorable; any-surface grappling is freer and much harder to level-design around), physics fidelity (full pendulum momentum versus assisted arcs — Spider-Man's swing is heavily faked toward feeling good), and combat pull rules — mass thresholds deciding who moves whom is instant enemy-design vocabulary. Pitfall: grapple as elevator — when the grapple simply teleports you along a straight line with no momentum, timing, or mid-flight agency, it's a context-sensitive ladder; the verb's joy lives entirely in the physics between attach and arrival, and implementations that skip the swing have built a loading screen shaped like a rope.
