POWER CURVES

The designed shape of player power over a game's duration — how quickly strength grows, where it plateaus, when the world catches up — as a deliberate authored curve rather than an emergent accident.

ARPGs like Diablo tune exponential curves where numbers grow by orders of magnitude, MMO expansions reset curves with gear cliffs, roguelike runs compress an entire zero-to-god arc into forty minutes (Vampire Survivors compresses it to twenty), and MOBAs shape per-match curves so carefully that 'early-game champion' is a strategic identity. Designers think in curves because the derivative is the experience: when power grows faster than challenge, players feel ascendant; slower, they feel ground down; matched exactly, they feel a treadmill — and each feeling has its place, which is why good curves are S-shaped or sawtoothed rather than linear (weak-feeling stretches make breakthroughs land, and each gear tier or level cliff is a small rebirth). The curve also determines content lifespan: steep curves burn through challenge quickly, flat ones demand skill instead of stats. Key decisions: multiplicative versus additive growth (multiplicative compounds into absurdity — a feature for power-fantasy genres, a bug elsewhere), how the world's difficulty curve tracks the player's (the gap between them is the felt experience), and sawtooth resets — per-run, per-expansion, per-prestige — that let designers re-run the curve's best stretch. Pitfall: the unexamined endgame plateau — curves that climb thrillingly and then flatline at cap leave players in the game's worst stretch permanently; if most playtime happens at the plateau, the plateau is the game, and it needs its own power vector (loot depth, mastery, prestige) or the curve's climb was a tutorial for boredom.
