Pipe Mania (Pipe Dream) founded the puzzle form — place pipe tiles ahead of advancing ooze — and its descendants run from BioShock's hacking minigame to countless mobile rotate-the-pipes puzzles; on the systems side, Factorio's fluid networks, Oxygen Not Included's plumbing, and Satisfactory's pipelines make flow routing a core engineering discipline where throughput, pressure, and junction logic are load-bearing. Designers use pipe connection because it's spatial reasoning with binary verification: a route either connects or doesn't, players read progress at a glance, and the puzzle scales cleanly — add rotation limits, timed flow, multiple concurrent fluids, or fixed obstacle tiles. In building games, pipes force infrastructure to occupy space: unlike abstract resource transfers, a pipe must physically route through the base, competing with walls, wires, and walkways for the same corridors, which is where the genre's satisfying spatial anguish lives. Key decisions: pre-flow planning versus racing the flow (Pipe Mania's advancing ooze converts contemplation into panic), whether pipes have capacity and throughput mechanics or just connectivity, and junction/splitter semantics — the difference between decoration and engineering. Pitfall: flow behavior that defies inspection — when a fluid network underperforms and the game offers no way to see where throughput dies (Factorio's fluid mechanics were notoriously opaque pre-rework), players build cargo-cult plumbing from wiki lore instead of reasoning, and the engineering fantasy collapses into superstition.
