PENETRATION/PIERCING

Attacks that pass through their first target — bullets punching through walls and bodies, arrows skewering lines of enemies, armor-piercing rounds trading raw damage for penetration.

Counter-Strike's wallbang culture (spraying through known thin walls at predicted positions) turned material penetration into map knowledge, Battlefield and milsims model penetration by material and caliber, ARPGs like Path of Exile make projectile pierce a build-defining modifier (pierce versus fork versus chain is a whole itemization dialect), and tactics games price armor-piercing ammo against soft-target alternatives. Designers add penetration because it makes cover honest and positioning three-dimensional: when walls have material properties, cover becomes a spectrum rather than a binary, map knowledge deepens (which walls are lies), and line-formation enemies create geometry puzzles where the skilled player aligns targets before firing. As an itemization axis, penetration versus stopping power creates loadout identity with real tactical texture. Key decisions: damage falloff through materials (full-damage penetration makes cover pointless; heavy falloff keeps it probabilistic), how players learn what penetrates (tracer feedback, hit markers through walls, damage numbers), and in ARPGs, how pierce interacts with on-hit effects — the multiplicative interactions are where builds live. Pitfall: invisible penetration rules — when players die through cover they believed solid, with no feedback distinguishing wallbang from wallhack, the game reads as cheating; penetration needs loud visual language (dust, exit holes, tracers) precisely because its whole point is violating the player's cover assumptions legibly.
