Gameplay built on recognizing and completing arrangements — matching three colors, aligning symbols, spotting the repeated sequence, completing the shape.

Match-3 is the mechanic industrialized (Bejeweled to Candy Crush's empire), Puyo Puyo and Lumines run pattern-building under time pressure, Wilmot's Warehouse makes pattern organization the player's self-imposed system, and puzzle-RPG hybrids (Puzzle Quest, Puzzle & Dragons) bolt match engines onto progression frames. Designers build on pattern matching because it taps the brain's most compulsive free service: humans pattern-match involuntarily, so the core loop requires zero tutorializing and delivers satisfaction at a neurological level — the completed match scratches something below strategy. The depth comes from what matching triggers: cascade physics turn one match into chains (introducing luck and lookahead), piece economy makes each match a spend decision, and hybrid designs convert matches into combat resources where board control becomes buildcraft. Key decisions: match consequences (clear-and-cascade versus persistent board states), how much lookahead the game rewards versus how much cascade luck it injects (the skill/slot-machine dial that defines the genre's respectability arguments), and pace pressure — timed matching is a different cognition than contemplative matching. Pitfall: pattern recognition without decision — when the best match is always visually obvious and cascades decide outcomes, the player is a cursor for the game's own solitaire; depth requires that the obvious match and the correct match regularly differ, so recognition feeds judgment instead of replacing it.
