Genshin Impact's elemental resonance (two pyro characters grant an attack bonus) makes team assembly a buildcraft layer before any fight begins, auto-battlers like Teamfight Tactics build their entire genre on trait-count thresholds (three rangers, six sorcerers), and tactics RPGs grant adjacency or pairing bonuses for linked characters. Designers add composition bonuses to make team-building a puzzle with structure: without them, party selection defaults to 'the six strongest units', but threshold bonuses create portfolio math — the seventh-best unit who completes a trait set beats the third-best who doesn't — and force genuine trade-offs between raw power and synergy depth. Composition bonuses also encourage roster breadth (collecting and leveling units you wouldn't otherwise field) and give randomized acquisition (gacha pulls, TFT shops) strategic texture, since each new unit reprices your existing collection. Key decisions: threshold design (TFT's 2/4/6 breakpoints create agonizing near-miss decisions), how legible active bonuses are during assembly, and whether bonuses reward homogeneity (all one faction) or diversity (one of each element) — the two produce opposite collection metas. Pitfall: composition bonuses that solve themselves — if one combination is clearly optimal, assembly collapses into copying the answer, and the system taxes newcomers without giving veterans decisions; the bonuses stay alive only while multiple compositions genuinely compete.
