Breathable air as a depleting resource — dive timers, vacuum exposure, cave air pockets, base atmosphere systems — where running out means rapid death rather than slow attrition.

Subnautica builds its entire tension architecture on the swim-down/swim-back oxygen budget, Oxygen Not Included makes colony-wide atmosphere the titular engineering problem, space survival games (Breathedge, Astroneer) run tethers and tanks, and even platformers use underwater air as the oldest soft timer in the medium. Designers use oxygen because it's the perfect leash: unlike hunger's slow nag, oxygen creates a hard, visible countdown that converts space itself into risk — every meter deeper is a meter that must be repaid in air — producing self-calibrated push-your-luck tension where players author their own close calls. Upgrade progression (bigger tanks, rebreathers, vehicles) then becomes literally measurable freedom. At the colony scale, oxygen turns atmosphere into infrastructure with flow, pressure, and contamination — breathing as a systems problem. Key decisions: how generous the timer is and how it's displayed (Subnautica's escalating warnings are pacing genius), what refills it (surface, pockets, deployables — each creates different route topology), and death versus rescue on depletion. Pitfall: oxygen as ambient annoyance — if air is cheap, refills are everywhere, and depletion never genuinely threatens, the meter is just periodic interruption; the mechanic only earns its interface cost when the player regularly makes the deliberate choice to push one minute deeper than is safe.
