Borderlands rewards overkill by rolling excess final-hit damage into the next shot, Doom's glory kills tier rewards to execution flair, and tactics games like Gears Tactics grant bonus actions for stylish eliminations. The concept's mirror also matters: X-COM-style overkill wastes the excess, silently teaching ammo-efficient target math. Designers reward overkill to solve last-hit economics: when a kill is worth the same whether finished by a sniper round or a pistol graze, players optimize toward minimal sufficient force and combat trends toward accounting — an overkill bonus makes big hits on weak targets worthwhile, keeps heavy weapons relevant against trash enemies, and injects celebration into what would be waste. Carrying surplus damage forward (Borderlands' Overkill, damage cleave) is the elegant version: nothing is wasted, so target ordering becomes a genuine optimization puzzle. Key decisions: reward type (points celebrate; carried damage economizes; resource drops incentivize), whether the bonus scales with the excess or triggers at a threshold, and readability — players need to see the overkill register or the incentive never lands. Pitfall: overkill bonuses that dominate optimal play — when the reward outweighs efficiency, players hold their strongest attacks for the weakest enemies, which is exactly backwards from the tactical instincts the rest of the game teaches.
