Adventure games built the genre on it (Monkey Island's absurd chains), Zelda dungeons structure each temple as one multi-step machine, The Witness and Baba Is You escalate within-panel step counts as their difficulty curve, and immersive sims render steps as improvised plans rather than authored chains. Designers use multi-step structure because solution length is the purest difficulty dial that doesn't require obscurity: each individual step can stay fair and discoverable while the composition demands working memory, planning, and sub-goal decomposition — the puzzle equivalent of sentence-to-paragraph. Long solutions also produce the genre's best payoff curve: mounting investment, then a cascade as the chain completes. Key decisions: how visible the goal-chain is (seeing the locked vault before finding the crank gives the chain a spine; steps discovered in order feel like errands), how state persists across steps (undoing step three by fumbling step five is the rage-quit generator), and step-count ceilings tuned to the audience — beyond a handful of dependencies, most players need external notes, which is either the design (Obra Dinn) or a failure. Pitfall: designer-logic links — a chain is only as fair as its least inferable step, and one arbitrary connection (use the fish on the mailbox) converts the whole elegant structure into lawn-mowing every item against every object; each link must be independently reasonable, because players experience the chain through its weakest one.
