Movement that carries physical weight — acceleration curves, preserved velocity, drift under direction change — where current speed is earned state rather than instant response.

Sonic made momentum a brand, Celeste tuned micro-inertia so precisely it reads as instant while still carrying flow, Tribes' skiing turned preserved velocity into a genre cult, racing games are momentum management as their entire discipline, and Mario's run-up jumps versus Mega Man's instant stops mark the design axis's two poles. Designers add inertia because it converts movement from input into skill: with momentum, position is a consequence of planning (the jump's outcome was decided by the approach), mastery has a visible ceiling (speedrunners chaining preserved velocity), and traversal acquires rhythm — pumping, carving, and flowing rather than translating stick to position. Momentum also makes weight class expressive: the tank feels like a tank because it can't stop lying. Key decisions: how much inertia before controls read as slippery (the ice-level complaint is inertia overdosed), whether velocity persists through jumps, walls, and mode changes (Tribes' answer built a community; most platformers clamp), and how visually speed is communicated so players can price their own momentum. Pitfall: inertia fighting precision demands — a game that asks pixel-exact landings while momentum smears the character past them punishes the physics it imposed; either the level design respects stopping distances or the mechanics offer a brake, and games that do neither get their floatiness listed in every negative review.
