Magnetic attraction and repulsion as a manipulable force — polarized objects that pull together or push apart, magnetic boots on metal surfaces, abilities that yank metal weapons or fling debris.

Zelda's Magnesis (Breath of the Wild) turned metal objects into a physics toybox, Magrunner and puzzle games build entire mechanics on same-pole-repels/opposite-attracts, Metroid-likes use magnetic rails and surfaces for traversal grammar, and Returnal-adjacent action games stage magnetized grapple points. Designers use magnetism because it's a force with a rule — unlike generic telekinesis, polarity gives it logic that puzzles can rest on (players must reason about which pole faces where), and its material selectivity (metal only) partitions the world into affected and inert, making level design's puzzle vocabulary legible at a glance. As traversal, magnetic surfaces re-orient movement without full gravity manipulation's disorientation cost. Key decisions: polarity as real mechanic versus attraction-only simplification (polarity doubles depth and doubles confusion), how strength scales with distance (linear falloff is learnable; realistic inverse-square feels random), and how magnetized objects behave under player control — snappy and dampened beats physically honest oscillation everywhere except comedy. Pitfall: physics fighting the puzzle — when the intended solution requires the magnetized crate to settle exactly there, but momentum, bounce, and jitter send it wobbling off the ledge, the player is solving the solver, not the puzzle; magnetism needs aggressive stabilization the moment an object approaches a valid resting state.
