CURSE/CORRUPTION BUILDUP
A creeping negative meter that accumulates from risky choices — picking up cursed items, lingering in tainted zones, using forbidden power — and inflicts escalating penalties or a transformation when thresholds are crossed.

Darkest Dungeon's stress and affliction system is the emblematic version, Hades' heat and Curse of Pandora modifiers trade corruption for reward, and roguelikes from Ancient Domains of Mystery onward have used corruption as the price of power. Designers use buildup meters to price temptation over time instead of instantly: each individual sip of forbidden power is survivable, which is exactly what makes players overdose. The meter also creates a second resource to manage alongside health, widening the decision space of every reward choice. Key decisions: whether corruption is cleansable (and how expensive that is), whether thresholds trigger known effects or random ones, and whether high corruption offers any upside to make flirting with it a strategy rather than pure loss. Pitfall: if cleansing is cheap and always available, corruption becomes a chore meter; the dread only works when removal is scarce enough that prevention is a real decision.
