Combining ingredients into food that grants buffs, restores resources, or is required for survival — from simple recipes to freeform experimentation. Cooking gives gathered materials a rewarding sink and turns preparation into gameplay: Breath of the Wild's freeform pot rewards experimentation, Monster Hunter's meals are pre-hunt buff optimization, Stardew's recipes are progression milestones. Designers use cooking to make exploration and farming pay off, to provide a buff economy that rewards preparation over reflexes, and to add a cozy, low-stakes activity that paces the tenser loops. Key decisions: recipe discovery (known list versus experimental combination), buff strength and duration (strong meals make preparation mandatory or trivialize challenge), ingredient sourcing depth, and UI friction (batch cooking versus one-at-a-time tedium). Pitfall: cooking that's mechanically mandatory but interaction-shallow becomes a chore between the real gameplay — the best implementations make the act itself either creative, optimizable, or genuinely relaxing.
