CONTESTED ZONES

Map regions whose ownership is actively disputed — control points, capture areas, frontier territory — where presence of opposing forces prevents or reverses capture progress.

Battlefield's Conquest mode made flag zones the genre standard, Planetside 2 runs continent-scale contested lattices, and strategy games like Company of Heroes tie resource income to holding contested sectors. Designers use contested zones to concentrate conflict: instead of players scattering across a map, the zone creates a schelling point where fights reliably happen, and the contested state (capture bar frozen while both sides are present) generates natural climaxes. Key decisions: how capture progress behaves when contested (freeze, decay, or tug-of-war), whether zones are worth intrinsic resources or just victory points, and how many zones to run simultaneously so action splits without diluting. Pitfall: zones that reward standing still produce passive gameplay — the best implementations layer objectives so defenders must actively patrol sightlines rather than crouch on the point.
