The Last of Us engineered Ellie to stay near cover, comment on the environment, throw bricks in fights, and (controversially) be invisible to enemies during stealth — a deliberate honesty trade to prevent constant immersion breaks. BioShock Infinite's Elizabeth was built to never need protection: she finds ammo and coins for the player, opens tears in combat, and cannot die, converting the escort-mission liability into an asset players loved. Designers invest in companion AI because a well-behaved companion is the strongest attachment machine in games — presence plus usefulness plus reactivity equals love — while a badly-behaved one (blocking doorways, triggering alarms, dying constantly) is the most-cited immersion killer in the medium. Key decisions: whether the companion can fail or die (escort fragility is the genre's great sin), how honest the simulation is versus rigged in the player's favor — most acclaimed companions cheat heavily and players prefer it — and how much ambient reactivity (comments, glances, idle behavior) the budget allows. Pitfall: simulation purity; a companion who realistically gets spotted and realistically dies is realistically infuriating, and players will always choose a lovable cheat over an honest burden.
